Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (popularly known as SJMSOM or simply SOM) is the school for management education and research in Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. SJMSOM was established in 1995 to promote interdisciplinary learning while keeping up with a fast-changing business environment with the objective of transforming professionals with technological backgrounds into the "Renaissance Leaders" of tomorrow[1]. In 2000, the school was renamed to Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, in honor of Dr. Shailesh J. Mehta, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Bombay and a contributor to the school. The head of school is Prof Karuna Jain. Dr. Anand Patwardhan and Dr. Mangesh Korgaonkar (aka MGK) preceded Prof. Jain as the directors of the school.
SJMSOM, being situated in a technological institute with a strong background in entrepreneurship, can draw on varied intellectual resources. This unique positioning of the school gives it access to technological resources, an incubation cell (SINE) and resources of varied interdisciplinary sciences (Industrial Design, Humanities, IT, etc.).

SJMSOM conducts education and research in leadership, economics, marketing, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, technology management, operations, strategy and other areas. The school offers a full-time degree course (Master of Management), doctoral course and Management Development Programs(MDP)for company representatives. The school offers short-term programs in areas of management for the faculty of technical and management institutions during summer and winter seasons. These courses are usually sponsored by organizations such as AICTE, ISTE and DSIR.
Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management extends consulting facilities to organizations with a view to help address management issues. Faculty and students participate in these projects. Organizations for which the school carried out consultancy projects include ICICI, The World Bank, Indian Oil Corporation, Indian Tube Manufacturers Pvt Ltd, Geologistics India Ltd, Tata Auto Plastics, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, ICRA, etc. The school also undertakes sponsored Research & Development projects from industrial and other organizations in Management and Policy-making.
To further the objective of strengthening and improving management education, the school undertakes development of case material in areas such as Financial Management, Business Planning, Marketing, ERP Implementation, Project Management, Manufacturing and Operations Management, Technology Assessment, Technology Management, etc.
The School of Management through its flagship Master of Management (M.Mgmt) program seeks to develop managers for an integrated understanding of all business functions.
One unique feature of the program is that apart from the regular courses on Finance, Accounting, Operations and HR, SJMSOM prepares for technology management with core courses like Technology Management. “Mission, Vision and Leadership”, an innovative course to hone leadership skills, provides the students the opportunity to work under the mentorship of distinguished Indian business leaders.
The two-year course is organized into eight terms. The students go through 20 core courses, a month-long winter project (optional), two-month summer project, live projects and a four-month final project. In the second year of the course, a wide range of electives is offered, and the students are free to take up any specialization or to take up a mix of courses for General Management.
Activities range from Asia’s biggest cultural festival Mood Indigo, India’s second-biggest festival on technology Techfest to IIT’s General Championship.
There are a number of clubs to pursue interests; these include a wildlife club, a swim club, a trekking club and many more. Academic clubs for each stream of management are established.
The life at SJMSOM is extremely hectic and demanding. The standards that are expected are extremely high and the academic requirements are stringent. The purpose of such a program is to provide a taste of the kind of life that can be expected by a manager in an actual work environment.
Avenues is the annual international business school festival of IIT Bombay. It is organized by students of Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management in October. It features participants from around the globe.[2]
Each year, Avenues revolves around a new theme and events are centered around it. Events recurring each year include Alankar, a leadership lecture series; Navonmesh, a business plan competition; Aswhamedh, a championship event, among others. New events are introduced every year.
Avenues 2011 was scheduled to be held from 14 to 16 October 2011 with the theme "Crossing Chasms... Realizing Dreams" which will culminate in frenzied activities, stimulating debates and solemn contemplations by students, academia and industry.
Avenues 2010 was held on 23 and 24 October 2010, with the theme "Change Evolve Sustain". Prominent speakers at this event included Kamal Hassan, the filmmaker, Adi Godrej, eminent industrialist, Subrata Roy, chairman of Sahara Group, S. Gurumurthy, reputed corporate advisor.[3]
Avenues 2009 was held on 31 October and 1 November 2009. Its theme was "People Planet Profit", based on the triple bottom line principle which adds sustainability to a firms profitability goals. Prominent speakers included M. Damodaran, former SEBI chief; Ajit Balakrishnan, founder and CEO of rediff.com, Rahul Bose, the actor, and many others. The event saw participation from over 150 B-schools across India as well as leading corporate houses and working professionals.[4]
Avenues 2008 was held on 18 and 19 October 2008. It featured the speakers Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Shivathanu Pillai and A N Roy as a part of the Alankar lecture series.[5]
Avenues 07 was held on 27 and 28 October 2007, as a part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of IIT Bombay with the theme “The Emperors of India” and how they are applied today’s management principles in their day-to-day rule to bring prosperity to the masses. This was the first time Avenues featured international teams.
Avenues 2006 was conducted on 28 and 29 October 2006 with the theme ‘Winning Matters’. The games spanned different management functions and were modeled on real life scenarios.
RPG Enterprises was the title sponsor with host of other associate sponsors like Infosys, Wizarth Advisors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Raymonds, NEN and Piramal Enterprises. Zee Business, DNA, Loksatta, Pagalguy.com and Radio One were the media partners.
Prominent clubs are Marktrix (Marketing), Opera (Operations), Systematics (IT/Systems), Finesse (Finance) and Consig (Consulting). These cater to marketing, operations, systems and finance buffs respectively.
Continuum is the rolling seminar series at the school that covers the latest management trends and brings together leading personalities of the corporate and academic world on a single platform. The seminars focus on the issues and challenges faced by a particular business function with insights from the knowledge and the experience of the participating speakers. The Continuums are held in five fields: Systems, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Operations.[6]
L!VE is the school's e-magazine that was started in January 2006 with the theme 'Management Redefined'. It was initially an IT and systematics magazine with the punch line "IT on the Go", but it has gone on to encompass all aspects of management and its disciplines.[7]
Dr. Shailesh J Mehta, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Bombay and a venture capitalist based in the US, was the chairman of the board and the CEO of Providian Financial Corporation, a former Fortune 500 company. He has served on the boards of Mastercard Inc., CIRRUS and many other organizations. He was appointed by the governor of California to the California State University Board of Trustees.
An MoU has been signed for Faculty Exchange Programme with the Kellogg Graduate School of Business, Northwestern University, USA.
An MoU has been signed for Faculty and Student Exchange Programme (FSEP) with Dongguk Business School, Dongguk University, Seoul, South Korea.
An MoU has also been signed for an FSEP with The School of Business Administration of University of Connecticut.
An MoU has been signed for an FSEP with the Graduate School of Venture, Hoseo University, South Korea.
University Synergy Programme with BaaN Institute to Collaborate in developing programmes in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). BaaN software is made available through an Enterprise Applications Laboratory for teaching and research.
The school enjoys the generous support of a number of leading industries and organizations including Ministry of Human Resource and Development (Government of India), ICICI, Hindustan Lever Ltd, Hindi Vidya Bhavan and Larsen & Toubro Limited. Hindustan Lever Limited and Hindi Vidya Bhavan provides a number of scholarships to students for excellence in academics every year. Apart from this there are a few merit-based scholarships from the Shailesh J Mehta Endowment Fund.
The school interacts extensively with departments and agencies of the government of India like the Planning Commission, Department of Electronics, Department of Science and Technology, CII and the Ministry of Environment & Forests.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed with Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India for collaboration in the field of Technology Management.
